Synopsis
Cláudia Jardim and Diogo Bento are two of the artists behind the creation of the plays Hamlet Sou Eu (2007), Romeu e Julieta (2017), and Macbad (2021)—a trilogy dedicated to three Shakespearean tragedies filled with death, murder, blood, and revenge, which together embody a world of bloody fate that is typically kept away from younger audiences. Furthermore, these are three works based on three classics of Western drama considered untouchable and set in stone by academic studies and the staging approaches that have been presented over time.
One of the main challenges that has always guided them was how to bring these texts to a young audience. How can they spark interest in works that are over 400 years old? Are these so-called timeless classics? How should they address the differences in the zeitgeist? Do these narratives still make sense today? These were some of the questions they faced and which they are trying to answer through the creation of these three productions.
It is precisely through these experiences—and through the interaction between the performances and the audience—that they aim to engage in dialogue, raise questions, and draw conclusions based on their experience. For lovers of the classics, for skeptics steeped in postmodernism, but above all, for everyone who oscillates between these two extremes and is interested in new approaches to the canon—they want to share doubts, develop theories, arrive at some ideas, and challenge them, only to start all over again. For forever and two days.
Claúdia Jardim
Has worked with the Sensurround Theater Company in productions directed by Lúcia Sigalho, and at the Teatro da Cornucópia in productions directed by Luís Miguel Cintra and Ricardo Aibéo. She is a member of Teatro Praga, where she works as a creator and performer. In addition, she has established creative partnerships with Patrícia Portela. Notable achievements also include her translation of Heiner Müller’s “Quarteto” and various workshops she has led at Teatro Viriato, Fórum Dança, and CNB, as well as with organizations such as A Avó Veio Trabalhar, the University for the Third Age of the Misericórdia Parish Council, and Mais Skillz, among others. She regularly collaborates with visual artists Vasco Araújo, Javier Nuñez Gasco, João Pedro Vale, and Nuno Alexandre Ferreira (“Palhaço Rico Fode Palhaço Pobre”).
Diogo Bento
Holds a bachelor’s degree in Portuguese Studies from FCSH–UNL and a degree in Theater—Acting Training from ESTC. He completed two graduate programs, one in aesthetics and the other in educational training, both at FCSH/UNL. As an Erasmus student, he studied at Paris 3, Paris 4, and Paris 8 universities. He earned a specialist degree in February 2020 in the field of Arts/Theater/Performance from the Lisbon Polytechnic Institute. He currently teaches performing arts at ESTC and theater practices at the Higher School of Dance. In theater, he has worked with groups such as Mala Voadora, Teatro da Garagem, Cão Solteiro, and Estrutura. He regularly collaborates with Teatro Praga as a creator and performer. He is a director with the Grupo de Teatro da Nova and has co-created several productions with Inês Vaz. He has presented shows in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Romania, Brazil, Turkey, and Macau. He wrote and performed the piece *We’ll Always Have Paris* (2019) at the Impasse festival and also authored the play *Juramento de Bandeira*, to be published shortly by Sistema Solar.
The course (ACD), in partnership with the APP (Association of Portuguese Teachers) Training Center, is currently undergoing certification and is accredited for teachers in Recruitment Groups 110, 200, 210, 220, 300, 310, 320, 330, 340, and 350.
