George Orwell’s classic work takes to the stage in a monologue that incorporates multiple voices, but above all grunts, neighs, and clucks. The animals’ revolt against the tyranny of the farm’s owner is the starting point for a fable about the ways in which we relate to one another. Added to this is the age-old theme of power: how irresistible it can be and, ultimately, how it corrupts.
In times of uncertainty and fear, as we witness fierce exercises of power, there is nothing more timely or universal than to provoke a discussion about who is in charge. Who is in charge here?
