Between 30 October and 11 November, the programme of LU.CA – Teatro Luís de Camões will be entirely dedicated to the João Fazenda cycle. Workshops, theatre and an exhibition make up this transdisciplinary cycle.
Stories with Portraits is a workshop conceived by João Fazenda that takes LU.CA into schools. For children over six years old, it starts from a photographic portrait and transforms it into a drawing, creating a musical narrative around the story of the photograph brought from home.
The show Spoken Portrait takes over LU.CA’s auditorium to tell the story of Jorge, a boy who lives inside a very special frame in a house full of photographs. This show – with live image manipulation by João Fazenda, text by Pedro da Silva Martins and music and narration by Bruno Humberto – uses very simple means to tell a story about images, memory and the freedom of imagination. Everything is done in full view of the audience, allowing them to watch the performance and simultaneously see how it is made.
“Glue”, “cut”, “paint”, “fill in” are the keywords for this installation that everyone can complete by adding something of their own to the artist’s illustrations. The exhibition opens on 30 October and remains on display in LU.CA’s mezzanine until the end of the cycle.
João Fazenda is a Portuguese illustrator whose practice spans illustration, drawing, animation, comics and painting. He studied graphic design and graduated in Fine Arts from the Faculty of Letters of Lisbon before dedicating himself to creating images for a variety of stories and formats. His work explores the relationship between drawing and narrative in its many forms.
