LU.CA invited António Jorge Gonçalves, comic book author, cartoonist, visual performer, illustrator, set designer and Portuguese teacher, to design a cycle entirely dedicated to graffiti. Titled Why do we draw on walls?, it begins on 1 February and ends on the 10th.
Starting from cave paintings as an example of the human need to mark walls, we will travel through the history of graffiti up to the present day. Nowadays, walls, barriers and facades in cities are occupied by all kinds of graffiti. Is it urban art or vandalism? This cycle seeks to reflect on the relationship between art and power and the place of civil disobedience in artistic expression.
