Shakespeare Cycle

Year 2023 From 1 March to 19 March

Author: LU.CA - Teatro Luís de Camões and Teatro Praga

It all began in October 2007, when Cláudia Jardim, Diogo Bento and Pedro Penim created Hamlet is me. Ten years later they presented Romeo & Juliet: an excellent and lamentable dessert, making use of technological tools and a cheesecake recipe called precisely Romeo and Juliet, prepared with the audience’s help.

In 2021, this time at LU.CA – Teatro Luís de Camões, the final show of this trilogy was born, titled MACBAD. It is the widely known story of a bully whose name is so bad it cannot be spoken – for fear of bad luck – from which serious lessons are drawn about the harmfulness of all forms of violence.
In order to broaden the reading and enjoyment of these three different Shakespeare works, a programme was designed to contextualise them and extend beyond the performances. This cycle brings together a set of proposals that make these tragedies resonate beyond their place on stage and in the auditorium. Using different mediation formats, it aims to extend the relationship with the works beyond their time, seeking connections with the present.

A co-production between Teatro Praga, LU.CA – Teatro Luís de Camões and Rota Clandestina.

The Shakespeare Cycle was presented within the context of the 1st Culture and Education Biennial of the National Arts Plan.
