In October, LU.CA – Teatro Luís de Camões dedicates its programme to illustrator Catarina Sobral. This cycle will include theatre sessions, a film-concert, an exhibition, workshops and the launch of the author’s latest book: Impossible.
In the first theatre creation by award-winning illustrator Catarina Sobral, it begins at the beginning: when everything was in the same place. The world and all the things that exist beyond it once fit in the same place. We do not know how it appeared, but we know the Universe originated in a very small space. The show Impossible tells the story of the universe, seen up close (and from several light-years away), from the Big Bang to the appearance of humans, taking us on a long journey among particles, stars and dinosaurs.
In this cycle, there is also space for the screening of the film-concert Ratio between two volumes, which for the first time will feature live music by André Galvão (double bass), Diogo Picão (saxophone), F Kent Queener (accordion), João Carlos Barata (viola da arco).
It is from the show that the book arises, to be launched by Orfeu Negro on 13 October, right after the performance. On the Sundays of 7 and 14 September, there is also an open workshop for audiences over 4 years old, also conceived from the author’s new work. In this workshop, Madalena Marques (performer in Impossible) asks what matter the Universe is made of.
Catarina Sobral was also given carte blanche to create a visual intervention in LU.CA’s mezzanine. Titled Big Bang, it can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday until 7pm, throughout the cycle.
Born in Coimbra, Catarina Sobral has illustrated eleven books, eight of which are her own. Without limiting herself to a specific technique, she tends to use a restricted colour palette, exploring the combination of textures and patterns.
